My Celebrant Finishing School

There’s a whole stack of composers who left behind unfinished symphonies. The best known one is probably Schubert, but Beethoven, Wagner, Sibelius and many other famous musicians didn’t complete their works before they shuffled off this mortal coil.

As a celebrant, has it ever seemed that a ceremony of yours felt unfinished? You’d listened attentively to your client(s), crafted a fabulous ceremony, but when it came to speaking it, you had the sense that something was lacking? It’s not uncommon! It’s often hard to put that feeling into words: something’s missing – but what? You might have a vague notion of what it was, but there’s potentially a whole world of possibilities with regard to speaking your ceremony that just hasn’t occurred to you – because they weren’t covered in your training.

It’s staggering how few trainee celebrants receive comprehensive voice and communication training: preferably one-on-one – and tailored to the individual. The result is that many celebrants sound like they’re reading. Even if you read aloud well, the more you sound like you’re reading, the less interest you’ll generate amongst your audience. When reading, the more spontaneous and natural you sound, the better you’ll come across to your listeners – and the more satisfaction and fulfilment you’ll get out of your celebrant work.

I kid you not, it is possible to sound spontaneous while reading. I’ve spent years developing this skill. I like to think of what I do as a celebrant finishing school – helping people to complete what they set out to do for their clients – leaving no ceremony unfinished.
If you’re interested in what I’m talking about, I’d be glad to have a phone chat or Zoom (at no charge) to see if you’d like to take things further.
